Does conception occur at fertilization or at implantation? If at fertilization, why don't we honor the dozens of babies all couples have statistically lost? A positive pregnancy test only occurs after implantation and studies show that only 30% of fertilized embryos implant. This is a really crucial question in determining the ethics of IVF.
Regarding the genetic testing of embryos before implantation with IVF; is it really more ethical to continually get pregnant and have miscarriages due to genetic abnormalities than to genetically test the embryos before implantation? Or to continue to create embryos through natural conception that don't implant? Is the only difference that we're unaware we created an embryo if we didn't get a positive pregnancy test that month? Why is it so egregious to not use genetically abnormal embryos when they would not survive either way - through a natural pregnancy or through IVF?
